Sweet Mickey’s – Ballard Goes Wonka over Candy Randy
Randy Brinker, former Apple employee and resident of Seattle’s famous Ballard neighborhood, wanted to open a local candy store. He approached Spoddid to help him develop the brand from the ground up and publicize the July 2012 grand opening.
Objective: Sweet Mickey’s Candy Shoppe
Sweet Mickey’s was named after Mickey Brinker, Randy’s grandmother, who inspired the idea of starting a Ballard neighborhood candy shoppe. “I’ve always wanted to show my gratitude for her selflessness in raising us, and the fond memories she gave me growing up. The bright colors, the sweet smell of caramel and chocolate…it is all still so vivid. When I think of sweets, I think of Grandma Mickey.” Randy says nostalgically.
Once Randy had a name, he needed someone to translate his vision for the candy store into a brand. He hired Spoddid to design the brand identity which included among many tasks designing the logo, copy writing, interiors and packaging design. After creating search engine optimized social media accounts (e.g., Facebook,Twitter, Yelp, Google Places), Spoddid leveraged contacts to create buzz and secure media placements about Sweet Mickey’s leading up to and after the grand opening.
Well, let’s just say the results were pretty sweet. With tons of buzz leading up to the opening, and significant ongoing media coverage, Sweet Mickey’s has been busy non-stop. Randy reports the store is earning higher than projected revenues and expects to turn a profit within the first year. The average small business takes from 2-3 years to see sustained growth so that’s a huge success!
